ZDNet: Windows 8 Tablets May Compete, Someday

News Posted by Andrew Podolsky, September 14th, 2011

Tech sites are abuzz this week over Windows 8, an upcoming operating system from Microsoft that will be a direct competitor to iPads, but won't be available until late next year. ZD Net recently ran an interesting analysis stating that Microsoft may have already fallen behind.

According to James Kendrick at ZD Net, Windows 8 has only been shown so far on Intel devices, which could have a big impact on battery life. But the bigger concern is the number of available apps. Kendrick is not hopeful that Microsoft can close the app gap with Apple and make the Windows 8 tablet as versatile for users.

The final analysis is that it's too soon to tell. The tablet industry is moving at a breakneck pace, and today's promising new technology may be next year's dud. Soon we'll learn more about the future of the iPad, but in the meantime, it's interesting to see other major companies try to play catch-up.
