The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore Review

Review Posted by Parisa Vassei, August 1st, 2011

The iPad is the perfect device for exploring interactive content such as digital magazines and e-books. While the device has the capacity to display digital content in a manner that is truly mesmerizing, many e-books seem to fall short in demonstrating the device's true potential. Fortunately, this is not one of them.

Based on an award winning short film by the same name, The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore is easily one of the most captivating iPad apps of all time. Amidst the fierce competition in the e-book realm, this app comes out as a winner and is perhaps the most brilliantly executed app of its kind.

A beautiful story made more beautiful by the gorgeous animation.

The journey begins as you learn about Mr. Lessmore, a man who's left with very little after a harsh storm. His losses inspire him to embark on a journey where he meets a woman with flying books. Sadly, the words on the pages of his own book have flown away during that treacherous storm, and he hopes throwing his book will enable it to fly as well. The book falls to the ground, but the generous lady hands him one of her flying books. So begins Mr. Morris' ride to a library of living books.

From that moment on, Mr. Morris takes a deep interest in books, spending much of his time restoring damaged ones and traveling to spread his love for literature with others. While accompanying Morris on his journey, you'll find a clever story that's printed on the bottom of each animated or illustrated page. The animations and illustrations are captivating and truly capture the device's full potential. As a whole, the app was quite reminiscent of a Pixar movie but enhanced for the iPad.

There's more than just the story to read and watch...

In addition to the lovely images and animation, the narrator's voice is an engaging and the background audio accompanies it quite fittingly. For an app that's so content-rich, we're amazed with its stability and responsiveness to multitouch gestures. Although the story is simple, it's one that can be enjoyed by a wide audience including children, parents, and the young at heart. Scenes can be relived by visiting the app's built-in table of contents, and audio and text may be controlled through the menu bar that appears on the right of the screen.

The reasons mentioned in this review--and many more--make it truly worthy of our must-have rating, and we highly encourage that you stop reading this review and download your copy immediately so you may experience it firsthand for yourself. Happy reading!
