Absolutely insane; leaderboard support; some of the best videogame music ever
Prone to crashes; little variation in the environment
If you can get past the crash bug, Robot Unicorn Attack HD gives players a wider perspective on the weirdness, and it's the better for it.

What's better than guiding a rainbow-spewing metallic unicorn through a monochromatic wonderland on the iPhone? Doing that very thing on an iPad, of course! Robot Unicorn Attack has made its way to the big screen, and it's everything you'd hope it would be: completely insane.

Like Canabalt, this is a game where your character automatically runs to the right, speeding up over time. Your job is to jump over pits and dash through star-shaped blockades in an effort to make it as far as possible. If you can pick up the floating fairies along the way, so much the better. Like all high score games, death is inevitable. Placing on the leaderboards is your goal.

Robot Unicorn Attack's particular brand of absurdity won't be anything new to you if you've played the iPhone or Flash version of the game. But even if you've experienced it before, a buy on the iPad might be warranted for one big reason: the screen.

A land of dreams and miracles.

One of our chief complaints about the iPhone version was that your unicorn can jump so high that the ground goes offscreen, making it difficult to plan your landing. On the iPad, you get a much wider view of your surroundings, alleviating this problem completely. Which means you'll get higher scores and win the adulation of your friends.

That's really the only difference between the two versions. The transcendent music remains blissfully intact, as do the overly-repetitive pieces of environment that are randomly woven together to create the gameworld.

One other issue we encountered was a major crash bug that occurred about half of the times we tried to start up the app. It's annoying, so you might want to wait for an update before purchasing.

In short, Robot Unicorn Attack HD will satisfy any fan of high score games who can handle the strangeness. It's not perfect, but it's a ton of fun and there's nothing else out there quite like it. At least until theheavy metal version comes out.
