iPad Digital Magazine Round-Up

There's no doubt that the iPad's large screen size is ideal for viewing digital content in "magazine" format, but what about those magazine publishers? Despite some controversies surrounding in-app subscription pricing, iPad magazines (and free companion apps) have been taking the app store by storm.

Here's our list of some of the top iPad magazine apps in the App Store. Since it would be quite exhaustive to write about every single digital magazine from the outset, we picked ten of our favorite periodicals in hopes you'd comment with a couple to share!

News

Time

If you're a current Time Magazine subscriber, you'll be able to access Time Magazine's iPad app for free during the length of your print subscription. You'll find all the same content you'd find in the print edition, with bonus pictures, videos, and international stories. The app is easy to navigate and enables you to store your downloaded issues in a personal library for future viewing.

Newsweek

For Newsweek fans and subscribers, the Newsweek app is a digital means of accessing all the magazine's content in an easy-to-navigate format. To make it even speedier, users can select the content that populates the landing page to jump right to their favorite sections. Additionally, users can share articles via Facebook and Twitter and enjoy the app's full-screen photo galleries covering a variety of newsworthy topics.

Finance / Business

Bloomberg Businessweek+

The highly-anticipated and redesigned Businessweek+ app was released just last month. Since then, it has received tremendous acclaim from viewers for having one of the most pleasing interfaces and presentations of content. As we've seen with many other magazine apps, subscribers to the print edition will benefit from free digital issues which will be downloaded on a weekly basis. In addition to fascinating articles, the app comes with exclusive video footage, the option to read in portrait or landscape format, font resizing, searching through issues, sharing of articles via Facebook and Twitter, and prompt access to market information from within the app

The Economist

Despite it's hefty price tag, the Economist magazine is undoubtedly one of the best publications for politics and global economic affairs. In iPad app format, issues are made available once a week on Thursdays at 9pm London Time. They can be downloaded to the device so they can be read without requiring an internet connection, which makes it a perfect in-flight companion on those long flights without WiFi. If you'd rather listen to the content as you jog, there are audio versions of the articles that can be downloaded via the app as well.

Tech & Lifestyle

The New Yorker

The New Yorker has been around since the 1920's, and despite its New York focus, the publication has a large fan base that spans the globe. Now available as an iPad app, the New Yorker app enables the user to access content digitally in a variety of languages. Since review, Conde Nast has added support that allows U.S. and Canadian print subscribers to access the digital content for free. While we hope this list expands to include more issues, it's still a well-designed app for fans.

Wired

Another Conde Naste publication, Wired Magazine's focus is on technology with a hint of politics, economics, and other relevant social issues. For tech geeks, the digital edition of this publication is more enticing than ever before. It comes with exclusive content like videos from the Wired Business Conference, a clip of the Lego eclipse computer in action, and other bits and pieces that were left of the cutting room floor.

As is the case with many similar apps, print subscribers are able to instantly access its digital content. If a monthly subscription scheme is not in the cards for you, you'll appreciate the option to purchase just the episodes you'd like when you'd like to indulge. It's pleasing design and engaging content make it a must-have for any technology fan, so read our review for more!

Fashion

Vogue & British Vogue

If fashion is what you crave, look no further than the Vogue and British Vogue iPad apps! These apps grant you access to additional exclusive content such as a tribute to Alexander McQueen by Vogue's Editor-in-Chief, Anna Wintour. While Vogue appears to be a solid companion app for Vogue fans, it may not suffice for all viewers since it does not contain access to full print editions. However, that seems to not be the case for British Vogue, which enables users to access print content as well. Either way, one of the two just might be worth a shot...

Glamour

If you're already a Glamour subscriber in the U.S. or Canada, do not hesitate to get this app! You'll appreciate its simple interface and access to interactive content such as editor's shopping picks, video, etc. Additionally, the app is available in numerous languages and comes at a fairly reasonable price ($1.99 per month/$19.99 per year until cancelled).

Health & Sports

Self

Conde Nast's "Self" magazine is also available in digital format. Again, content is accessible to all users with a print subscription and those who purchase digital content through the in-app purchase scheme. Available in many languages, Self is a health and fitness-focused publication with advice on dieting, beauty, exercise and style. Each monthly issue comes with exclusive content relevant to that month's topics, and you can choose to read the issues through your subscription or by making a one-time purchase to your iPad.

Sports Illustrated

While SI's magazine app has mixed reviews, we can't help but mention it for subscribers. With its extensive list of exclusive features including expanded photo galleries, live scores and custom sports news feeds, video essays, additional slideshows and video, you'll have a lot to look at when you're not updating your Twitter or Facebook. Like many similar apps, current subscribers have free access to this content as well.
