Atari Building an iCade Competitor

News Posted by Grant Holzhauer, September 6th, 2011

The iCade, which turns your iPad into a mini arcade cabinet, is a great idea, but its high price ($99) and support for only a handful of games were issues for us. Atari is looking to change that as they plan to release their own take on the peripheral.

The Atari Arcade-Duo Powered Joystick is currently planned for release in the near future, and it's expected to come at a lower price point than the iCade.

As you can see in the image, it should be available at major retailers like Target and Wal-Mart, which will give it another edge over the competition.

The device is advertised as using the 30-pin connector, and Mac Rumors uncovered that it will not have Bluetooth or landscape view support. It's also designed for the Atari's Greatest Hits app, just like the iCade, although other app developers will be able to add support for it if they wish.
