Windosill iPad Review

Posted by Tim Rattray, January 20th, 2012

Games have tried to be “art” ever since the medium was created, but few take the task as seriously as Windosill. This logic puzzler is akin to scrolling through an interactive abstract mosaic, and it’s an absolute thrill ride.

Michael Jackson The Experience HD iPad Review

Posted by Chris Reed, December 8th, 2011

On consoles, Michael Jackson The Experience is a game that makes you get on your feet and dance. Obviously, this wouldn't work on an iPad-- nobody wants to fling their $500 device around at high velocities-- so the developers have turned it into a music/rhythm game on iOS. So, instead of trying to mimic slick dance steps with your whole body, you can lean back on the couch and tap the screen to make MJ grab his crotch and do the moonwalk.

Aquaria iPad Review

Posted by Jason D'Aprile, November 17th, 2011

Originally released as an indie PC game, Aquaria feels wonderfully at home on the iPad. This is a beautiful and evocative 2D adventure that comfortably bears comparison to Nintendo’s venerable Metroid series. Thanks to intelligently ported controls and great use of the iPad’s screen and hardware, Aquaria feels as if it were meant for tablets.

Hector Ep2 HD - Senseless Acts of Justice Review

Posted by Andrew Podolsky, August 29th, 2011

After a strong debut last year, a second episode of the brand-new adventure series Hector: Badge of Carnage has finally hit the App Store. Inspired by classic adventure games like The Secret of Monkey Island, as well as over-the-top police parodies like Hot Fuzz, Hector Episode 2 is a fantastic game for anyone who loves their puzzles with a barbeque-stained helping of humor.

BodyMedia Fit Review

Posted by Jason D'Aprile, August 25th, 2011

There’s no shortage of fitness apps and devices, but the BodyMedia Fit is one of the most technologically innovative and useful exercise aids out there. While most competing products-- be they purely app-based or external devices-- tend to be little more than glorified pedometers, the Fit measures all your activity right down to how well you sleep.

Jamie's Recipes Review

Posted by Jason D'Aprile, August 9th, 2011

We’ll assume for a moment that if you’re reading this, it’s because you have some interest in celebrity chefs in general and Jamie Oliver in particular. If that’s the case, an app like Jamie’s Recipes is likely to appeal to you much more than it would to non-Food Network followers. Celebrity-themed apps aren’t uncommon and neither are virtual cook books, but if nothing else, Oliver’s latest actually sports nice production values.

Ultimate Sharks Review

Posted by Jason D'Aprile, August 4th, 2011

The iPad has more than proven its worth as a tool for learning, and as a result, there’s an incredible treasure trove of interesting and engaging educational apps out there. Discovery Communications’ Ultimate Sharks is clearly aiming for this market, but all it amounts to is an overpriced tie-in to the Discovery Channel’s Shark Week. At $5, you might expect a thoroughly in-depth study of these fascinating creatures, but all you get is a bunch of short videos, dry text, and minimal extras.

Deadlock: Online iPad Review

Posted by Grant Holzhauer, July 21st, 2011

Most deathmatch-style shooters take place from a first-person perspective. Those that vary from the norm often employ an over-the-shoulder point of view. Crescent Moon Games is trying something a bit new with Deadlock, and while it takes awhile to get adjusted, there's hours of frantic fragging in store for you.

Puffin Web Browser Review

Posted by Grant Holzhauer, July 21st, 2011

We've been enjoying our iPads for so long, sans Flash, that many of us have all but forgotten about the once-coveted technology. Still, the web has not fully evolved past Flash, and at times it's still necessary. Now with Puffin, the iPad is no longer excluded from the Flash community, at least not completely.

Sid Meier's Pirates! for iPad Review

Posted by Jason D'Aprile, July 20th, 2011

Next to Sid Meier’s Civilization, there are few PC games with as much affectionate nostalgia attached to them as Sid Meier’s Pirates! Mixing the legendary designer’s penchant for surprisingly deep, yet playable, strategy with adventure gaming, he created a pirate-themed game that has lived on long after its initial release in 1987 on the Commodore 64. Pirates! has hit more platforms than we can remember, but now it’s on your iPad.

Pocket RPG iPad Review

Posted by Jason D'Aprile, July 18th, 2011

To call Crescent Moon Games’ latest, Pocket RPG, an actual role-playing game would require a very loose definition for the genre. While there are some minor RPG-like elements, the game is really just a fast-paced, twin-stick arcade game. The focus is almost solely on taking down hordes of monsters in a quest for gold and glory. Calling it “Pocket” is also a bit misleading, as the game is currently an iPad-only title, so we can only assume the developers wear pants with really huge pockets.

Ant Raid iPad Review

Posted by Jason D'Aprile, July 14th, 2011

Ant Raid is developer Prank’s first release, but it’s clear they’ve got a bright future. This quirky take on real-time strategy might forgo many of the common elements of the genre, but it makes up for it in play value. Leading groups of ants to victory against mutated snails, bees, and other insect predators is harder than it looks, but it's certainly worth the effort.

Updated: Ticket to Ride iPad Review

Posted by Grant Holzhauer, July 11th, 2011

Shortly after our review went live, Days of Wonder updated the game to include pass-and-play local multiplayer. This was one of our few complaints in the original review, so we’ve given the new addition a spin. For good measure, we’ve also played through the various expansion packs.

Brain Eater's Bible Review

Posted by Parisa Vassei, July 11th, 2011

As if appearing in Seinfeld and MADtv weren't impressive enough achievements, Pat Kilbane has decided to venture into the world of publishing with his graphical horror novel (co-authored with zombie author J.D. McGhoul), "The Brain Eater's Bible". It's now available in both hardcover formats and in its ideal form, as an interactive iPad app.

War Grimoire HD iPad Review

Posted by Jason D'Aprile, July 7th, 2011

War Grimoire HD follows in the proud tradition of many iOS games by being a tower defense game. However, there are enough variations on the theme to make it feel like more than just another tower defense game. With its fantasy motif and a focus on placing individual units instead of building structures, War Grimoire HD has a solid base with some interesting gameplay elements.

Avadon: The Black Fortress HD iPad Review

Posted by Grant Holzhauer, July 5th, 2011

Role-playing games generally fall into one of two camps. There's the open-ended, real-time Western-style, and the linear, turn-based Eastern-style. Both can be fairly predictable, barring a few changes to the characters, story, or environments. They usually come from big publishing houses, too. Avadon defies all these modern conventions and attempts to be a hybrid breed, which is especially sweet coming from an independent developer.
